This is the Interactive 3D model of Glycated Hemoglobin HbA1c. This model is based on x-ray crystallography data sets: 1HHO, and 3B75. These models are cast by hand in high quality, durable acrylics. Model dimensions are 4in x 3cm x 3in. Each model comes with a custom-made display base. Designed to explain the Hemoglobin A1c Test ("The A1c Test") to patients living with diabetes, sugar molecules on the surface of a model of hemoglobin are magnetized allowing educators to demonstrate the damaging effects of elevated blood glucose.
Protein DescriptionHemoglobin (Hb) is the protein from inside red blood cells. It gives our blood its red color and transports oxygen molecules throughout the body. If exposed to elevated levels of blood glucose for too long, glucose will permanently attach to hemoglobin, a process called glycation. Since the lifespan of a red blood cell is only ~90 days, monitoring for the presence glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) provides an ideal perspective of a patient's self-management of blood glucose metabolism. Achieving prolonged target HbA1c scores is directly related to the reduction of diabetes-related complication.
