Cytokine

Cytokines are a broad and loose category of small proteins important in cell signaling that cannot cross the lipid bilayer of cells to enter the cytoplasm. Cytokines have been shown to be involved in autocrine, paracrine, and endocrine signaling as immunomodulating agents.
